The artwork for the interchange of Highway 99 was designed to integrate seamlessly with the reconstruction project. A mix of vehicle ramps, traffic infrastructure, and sound and retaining walls, the interchange accommodates pedestrians and bicycles as well as vehicular traffic. The pattern design of the retaining wall derives from a variety of abstracted transportation modes, from historic wagon wheels and farm tractors, to contemporary industrial tools and parts. Through collage and repetition, the images morph into abstract patterns, while evoking the industrial and agricultural history of Stockton.
