A R T A N D D E M O C R A C Y, El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Gallery, Los Angeles, California, 1999 Digital print This long, scroll-like computer-digitized print entitled Behind the Great Wall was printed ten years after the first installation Behind the Great Wall took place in Santa Monica. It is a composite of the panoramic photographs of the Berlin Wall taken by Shinkichi Tajiri (artist’s professor in Berlin between 1982-1985) in 1980, and the photographs of the Great Wall of China, taken by Nagasawa in 1986, when she traveled from Berlin to Beijing on Trans-Siberian Rail Road, and met Shikichi Tajiri in Beijing. The print was exhibited in Los Angeles to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 and the fall of the Berlin Wall, which paved the way for German reunification.
