Robert Whitman, Reflections on Recent Works: Swim and Local Report
For the second installment of the 2015-2016 Stony Brook University Art History & Criticism Lecture Series we are pleased to announce that multimedia artist Robert Whitman will discuss his two latest projects: Swim (2015) and Local Report (2012). Whitman’s career spans multiple decades and disciplines. His recent theatrical performances employ telecommunications networks and multisensory elements to conceive new communities of spectatorship in the theater and gallery alike. The programming committee is thrilled to host Robert Whitman on the 50th anniversary of the founding of Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T.), a vibrant community of artists that redefined what constituted art in the twentieth century.

Attendance is free and open to the public, with a small reception of wine and hors d’oeuvres following the Q&A.

IAM Pocket Sized invited artists from around the world to create art that fits in the palm of your hand! I AM Pocket Sized exhibits a large survey of paintings, drawings, collages, sculpture, and more.

In today’s art world, where the notion that bigger is better seems to be too-often taken for granted, it’s refreshing to see that contemporary artists are continuing to produce work on a small scale as well. While small-scale paintings and sculptures, or maquettes, have often been produced as preliminary studies for larger-scale works, the artists represented in the IAM’s current exhibition demonstrate that small works hold a valid and unique place of their own in an art world often dominated by more sizable creations.

This year’s Annual Open Call exhibition has been curated by Rhonda Cooper, who was the Gallery Director of Stony Brook University’s Paul W. Zuccaire Gallery (formerly University Art Gallery) from 1983 to 2013. In addition to her curatorial work, Cooper has taught art management and Asian art history courses at Stony Brook University, the Art Institute of Boston, and the University of Bridgeport. She is also a co-author of the book, Masterpieces of Chinese Art.

How to Catch Eel and Grow Corn / Athena LaTocha, MFA 2007

Athena LaTocha, M.F.A. 2007, has been invited to show her work in a group exhibition of five Native American women artists representing two generations living and working in New York City, organized by Stephen Hepworth, Independent Curator.

Robert Storr, On Louise Bourgeois and the Privilege of Sublimation

Renowned art critic and curator Robert Storr derives his lecture from his forthcoming book, Intimate Geometries: The Work and Life of Louise Bourgeois (2014). Storr was curator in the Department of Painting and Sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, from 1990 to 2002, where he organized exhibitions on Elizabeth Murray, Gerhard Richter, Max Beckmann, Tony Smith, and Robert Ryman. In addition to writing for numerous art publications, he has taught at the Institute of Fine Arts, CUNY graduate center, and the Bard Center for Curatorial Studies, as well as the Rhode Island School of Design, New York Studio School, and Harvard University. He is currently Professor of Painting/Printmaking and Dean of the School of Art at Yale University.

MFA Alumnus: Luis Fernando Ramirez

SB MFA Alumnus and Joan Mitchell Fellow Luis Fernando Ramirez Celis is now curator of the Museo de Arte del Banco de la República in Bogotá, Colombia, continues to make sculpture based on architectural history, and is teaching art and architecture. He had a residency this year at the Banff Centre in Canada, and was invited to participate in the Cartagena Bienale, where he showed the piece described and illustrated below.

Walden 13 is a synthetic beehive panel hung from the ceiling and built on the geometry of a housing complex called Walden 7, designed by the architect Ricard Bofill in Catalonia, Spain. Each of the plastic cells is filled with honey and sealed on the edges with beeswax; bees are allowed access to the honey. In the seventies this complex proposed an alternative to the rational housing blocks that were in their heyday. It was a utopic architectural proposal that hoped to condition the behavior of the residents in favor of the common good. Walden 13 continues the saga begun in literature by Henry David Thoreau’s Walden; or, Life in the Woods, followed by B. F. Skinner’s Walden Two, the novel that inspired Bofill’s design for Walden 7.
The uninhabited apiary architecture of Walden 13 is filled with honey— a treasure accumulated in the plastic cells—waiting to be discovered and put to use. Similarly, the modern architecture it is meant to represent contains in its structure utopic ideas waiting to be harvested and used, like the honey in Walden 13. A multidisciplinary artist, Ramírez studied architecture and works with photography, drawing, video, models, installations, and popular music. He believes that the spirit of modern architecture refuses to go away entirely. Through images, fictions, and cultural hybrids, his work reflects on the possible significance of surviving modernity—hybridized, contaminated,
and longed for.
